This past November, the salt air of the Potomac met the sweet scent of marigolds as The Wharf transformed into a vibrant canvas of remembrance and joy. On Saturday, November 1, 2025, Washington DC’s premier waterfront destination hosted its annual Celebración Día de los Muertos, a colorful tribute to the Mexican tradition of honoring departed loved ones.
In partnership with the Mexican Cultural Institute and Fiesta DC, the afternoon offered a soulful blend of ancient tradition and modern DC energy. Here is a look back at the highlights that made this event the heart of the District’s autumn calendar.
The Spirit of the Celebration
The festivities turned the pier into a bustling marketplace of culture. Visitors immersed themselves in the artistry of the holiday through several interactive experiences:
- Ofrendas & Altars: Hand-crafted community altars decorated with cempasúchil (marigolds), photos, and traditional offerings stood as focal points for reflection.
- The Catrinas Parade: The highlight of the afternoon was the spectacular Catrinas Parade. Participants donned elaborate costumes and stunning skeletal face paint, embodying the iconic “Grand Dame of Death.” The parade showcased a sea of floral crowns and flowing gowns, winding through the crowds and bringing the history of the holiday to life with every step.
- Creative Stations: Families engaged in the tradition of sugar skull decorating and transformed into Catrinas and Catrines at professional face-painting stations to join in the spirit of the parade.
- Cultural Performances: The stage at M Street Landing came alive with performances by Ballet Folklorico El Tepeyac, De Colores, and Fundación Elena, alongside the high-energy sounds of the Latin Celtic band La Unica.
Savoring the Tradition
The celebration featured a Modelo Beer Garden for raising a toast to life, while local vendors offered Mexican-inspired street food that captured the authentic flavors of the season. A life-sized sugar skull display served as the perfect backdrop for attendees to capture memories of their own parade-ready ensembles.
The Main Event: The Light Procession
As twilight fell over the Potomac, the energy shifted from festive to ethereal. The Wharf held its signature Community Light Procession, a breathtaking moment of unity.
Starting at M Street Landing and winding along the waterfront to The Grove, participants carried LED candles, creating a “river of light” against the backdrop of the city skyline. This glowing tribute served as a symbolic path for spirits to visit the living, closing the evening with a sense of peace and community.
